The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) below provide important background information about the project, the planning process, and the report. We recommend reading the FAQs before reviewing the draft report.

Q - What is the Upper Gunnison Valley Transportation Plan 2008 Update?

A – The targeted plan update to the Upper Gunnison Valley Transportation Plan, originally completed in 1999, is an effort to refine and update (but not replace) the original Plan. The 2008 Update addresses changed conditions and objectives affecting the Valley’s transportation system, particularly the highest-priority issues identified by the community and stakeholders. Other issues not addressed in this plan update remain valid in the 1999 Plan. This 2008 Update incorporates the 1999 Plan with the intent that both documents together comprise the Upper Gunnison Valley Transportation Plan.

Q – Who was responsible for managing, funding, and preparing the 2008 Update?

A – The project was managed by the Gunnison Valley Rural Transportation Authority (GVRTA) and funded by Gunnison County, the City of Gunnison, the Town of Crested Butte, and the Town of Mt. Crested Butte. The 2008 Update was prepared by the Boulder consulting firm of Charlier Associates, Inc. The firm also prepared the 1999 Plan. The targeted updated was completed on a fast-track schedule spanning April-October 2008. As with the 1999 Plan, this targeted update focused on the area from Gunnison to Mt. Crested Butte along SH 135, 6th Street, and Gothic Road connecting each community.

Q – How was the local community involved in the 2008 Update?

A – The process was a collaborative effort involving community residents, stakeholders, staff, and elected officials. Public engagement opportunities included six stakeholder and local staff meetings, two community workshops, two open-public GVRTA Board meetings, and a project website (with comments form) and online transportation survey. Meetings and workshops were held in both Gunnison and Crested Butte.

Q – What was the focus of the 2008 Plan Update and what topics were covered?

A – Given the great progress made since completion of the 1999 Plan, this targeted update focuses on priority issues, challenges, and opportunities identified by the local community. The 2008 Update’s objective is to advance the region’s planning and implementation for traffic flow, transit, walking, biking, and parking. The final report documents the public input and technical and policy analysis conducted to support detailed mobility recommendations.
